For sure, people invented many other things earlier, like for example the use and keeping of fire. As many inventions, the wheel was first seen in the Near East, about 8,500 years ago. But these wheels were used as slow turning potter’s wheels. Pottery was already an old technology back then. Wheels for cars, for transportation were first used about 3,000 years later, still in the Stone Age, in Sumeria and Syria. The potter’s wheel was a flat disk, mounted horizontally on a pivot. The potter needed an assistant to keep the wheel turning because he needed his both hands for shaping the clay. It was not until the 16th century, when – in Europe – a separate flywheel was added to control the speed better. The food treadle was not invented until the 19th century.
