Apart from the prehistoric and early medieval large castles, all the way into the High and Late Middle Ages, there were wooden castles. Partly these were, like reconstructed at the Bachritterburg Kanzach, meant as seat of the lower nobillity who for financial reasons could not build in stone or who were not allowed to by there liege lords. Such wooden castles were spread widely and often were situated in a village. Nowadays there is mostly nothing left of it, seldom a little hill. besides this kind of castles, there were as well siege castles.
